What Happens During Septoplasty?
Septoplasty is a procedure that involves straightening the nasal septum. The procedure usually requires small incisions that are hidden within the nose. Sometimes a small incision on the lower part of the nose between the nostrils (columella) is required. There are several techniques and approaches, but the goals of septoplasty surgery are to straighten the nasal septum, trim, or straighten cartilage that is out of place, and sometimes straighten the overall appearance of the nose.
Functional nasal surgery such as septoplasty is often but not always paid for by insurance. Sometimes, septoplasty can be combined with cosmetic rhinoplasty, but the cosmetic portion of the procedure is not covered by insurance.
What Is Involved in Septoplasty Recovery?
Nasal surgery is normally done as an outpatient procedure, meaning you go home the same day. Nasal packing gauze and an external splint are often required after nasal surgery. Bruising of the nose and cheeks and swelling continues for about a week in most cases.
Any sutures are removed after several days. You will need to take it easy for a few weeks, with activity and lifting restrictions for a month or more, based upon your individual rate of healing.
