Sculptra is an injectable that is typically used to replace lost facial volume. Because it works by stimulating the body to increase its own production of collagen, it has longer-lasting results than many dermal fillers. Recently it has also been used in buttock augmentation for women desiring a Brazilian butt lift but do not have enough excess fat for grafting. Sculptra for buttock enhancement has been Dr. Flugstad’s primary use for the product.

What is Sculptra?

Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible, synthetic form of lactic acid, which is a substance naturally produced by the body after exercise. It received FDA approval for cosmetic uses in 2009 but was in use for many years prior in such medical products as resorbable stitches and certain types of implants.

What is the procedure for administering Sculptra?

Based on your consultation, Dr. Flugstad will have noted the areas to be treated and map the injection site(s) on your skin. The area of treatment will be cleansed, and a topical anesthetic may be applied to reduce any discomfort from the treatment. Dr. Flugstad will then inject the deeper layers of the skin with multiple small injections.

Sculptra for butt enhancement

Some people who are very slim want to enhance the buttocks, but do not have adequate excess fat to harvest and transfer. Our preferred method for buttock enhancement is fat transfer, but some patients just don’t have enough fat to harvest.

For those patients, buttock implants are an option, but Sculptra can be used to enhance butt shape and size, as an alternative to implants. The results of Sculptra buttock enhancement are modest, but the treatment normally gives a noticeable improvement for those who may not have other options. Sometimes two or three sessions of Sculptra injection are needed to optimize the results.

One great advantage of Sculptra buttock enhancement is the ability to have the treatment with only local anesthesia. Some of our patients prefer this for a more rapid recovery.

What is the recovery for Sculptra buttock enhancement?

Most patients have mild soreness and swelling for 2-3 days. We do ask that you minimize sitting for around 1 week if possible. You will also need to wear a lightly compressive spandex or Spanks garment for 1-2 weeks. Dr. Flugstad has found that these recovery methods give the best results for Sculptra Buttock Enhancement.

Does Sculptra have any risks or side effects?

The most common side effects are swelling and bruising at the injection site, which is to be expected with virtually any injectable. Other temporary and typically short-lived, common side effects may include pain, tenderness, redness, itching, bleeding, or bumps/nodules.

A nodule is a growth of abnormal tissue. Unlike the more common, temporary side effects, it has appeared in only 7% to 9% of patients, but it is a function of too shallow an injection, rather than any rejection of or allergic reaction to the Sculptra. This tells you that nodules are the result of less-skilled administration of the procedure.

What results can I expect from treatment?

Because the action of Sculptra is to stimulate the body’s own collagen production, results will not be seen immediately after the procedure, as with other types of injectables. On average it takes approximately 12 to 24 weeks after the last treatment to reach the most noticeable increase in volume at the treatment site. Optimal results typically last for approximately 2-5 years, with a gradual decline in volume and fullness over the following years.

Why choose Dr. Flugstad for Sculptra treatment?

As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Flugstad has extensive knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of structures and tissues in all areas of the body. This knowledge combined with years of experience performing the procedure means that you can be confident in his ability to provide reliable treatment with minimal risk of complications and a result that enhances your quality of life.
